77-LA Nationals take 2 of 3 from 53-Brooks

Ebbets Field
GAME 1
Sutton vs Loes
LAD 4, BRO 3

All of the scoring occurred in the first 3 stanzas.  The rest of the concert the symphony was quiet.  That symphony would be the Dodger Symphony who showed up in full force to raz the team the refuse to call Dodgers and whom they refer to as "the LA Nationals".  The aforementioned migrants to the left coast relied on a 3 run blast by "the Penguin", Ron Cey and the right arm of Don Sutton (8IP/3ER).  While on most nights Sutton's line would be just average, it was not on this night when he was facing the league's most potent offense.  Bill Loes, who gave up 4 in 7IP took the loss.

GAME 2
Rhoden vs Roe
BRO 14, LAD 8

The "LA Nationals" knocked ole' Preach out of the box after 2 dreadful innings and 7 earned runs.  Most teams would be dead and buried, but not the Boys of Summer, who can explode offensively on any day that ends in "Y".  Bob Milliken was summoned from the pen to hold down the fort, which he did like a champ for 5+ innings until he handed the ball off to Clem Labine to close it.  Three Brooks had 3 hits (Jackie, Campy and Gil).  The team scored 14 on 16 hits and seems capable of outhitting their average pitching.

Dodger Std
GAME 3
Erskine vs Hooton
LAD 6, BRO 5

The series went 3,000 miles west to play the rubber match in O'Malley's Cathedral in Chavez Ravine.  The Brooks got bad news right off the bat when Oisk's chronic right home came up lame after 8 pitches.  The combo of Joe Black and wonder kid Johnny Podres were able to stave off the LA bats until the 7th when Ben Wade gave up a solo shot to Mr. Forearms, Steve Garvey.  That tied the game up a 4 all.  In the top of the 9th the Little Colonel doubled home Billy Cox to put Brooklyn up 5-4, but alas that was not going to last as Labine went right from the pen straight to Dressen's dog house.  Dusty Baker singled home Bill Russell and then scored the winning run as Reggie Smith singled him home.  Broadcaster Vin Scully couldn't wait for the series to end, because he wanted both groups to win.

Mets take 2 of 3 from Diamondbacks

Game 1   Mets 8   D-Backs 5  at Shea Stadium

Mets take 4-0 lead early as Benny Agbayani hits a 3 run HR (1) in the first. Junior Spivey cuts the lead in half with a 2 run HR in the 4th. After Todd Zeile hit a solo HR (1) to make it 5-2, Matt Williams blasted a 2 run HR (3) to make it 5-4. The DBacks tied it in the 7th when a run scored on an error by Turk Wendell who had just come in to the game in relief. But the Mets bounced right back in the bottom of the 7th as Wendell helped his own cause with an RBI single scoring Jay Payton with what proved to be the winning run. A pinch hit single later in the inning by Lenny Harris made it 7-5 before the Mets added an insurance run in the 8th.

Wendell was the winner in relief. Bobby Witt took the loss in relief

Game 2  Mets 6  D Backs 1  at Shea Stadium

Bobby Jones pitched shutout ball over 7 innings, allowing only 6 hits as the Mets won for the second straight day. Todd Zeile hit his second HR of the series, Mike Piazza drove in two runs and Edgardo Alfonzo and Jay Payton each had 3 hits as the Mets won easily. Mike Morgan was the starter and loser for Arizona

Game 3  D Backs 7  Mets 4  at Bank One Ballpark

103 degrees in Arizona and its Curt Schilling against Mike Hampton in a battle of aces. But is not Hampton's day as the Diamondbacks score 7 runs off him in just 5 2/3 as the lefty allowed 13 hits. Trailing 7-2 in the 7th, the Mets rally and score 2 with Schilling out of the game but they fall short as Byung-Hyun Kim picks up his 4th save of the year.

Steve Finley was 2-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Craig Counsell was 3-5 with 2 RBIs

Arizona is now 9-5 as they battle with the 38 Cubs for first place in the NL West. The Mets are now 5-9 as they fight to get out of the cellar in the NL East. Next:  The Mets play the 1962 Giants while the Diamondbacks play the 28 Cardinals
