GAME 1
Erskine vs Rush
Dodgers 7, Braves 3
After stumbling out of the box in the opening series Brooklyn found their lumber and Oisk made sure the Bravos didn't. Every Bum starter, minus Oisk (who is only hitting .250) grabbed a safety in this one. Batters 3-7 each had 2. Jacki, Campy and Skoonj all had homers, but leadoff man Junior Gilliam had 3 RBI's and a triple. For the losers All-Star third sacker Eddie Mathews was a perfect 3-3 with 2 walks. All-World Rightfielder Henry Aaron was held in check (0-5), which might have been the difference maker.
GAME 2
Podres vs Buhl
Dodgers 11, Braves 1
...and the hits just keep on comin'. No other way to describe it. The Boys of Summer slammed 11 run on 18 hits. Skoonj (3-4) racked up 5 RBI's thanks to two 2 baggers. Rookie Johnny Podres gave up just 1 run in almost 7 innings of work, but no one seemed to even notice that he fanned 10 with all those fireworks going on around him. Junior Gilliam (4-6) stayed hot. Heck, who isn't hot on a team hitting a collective .299.
Ebbets Field
GAME 3
Spahn vs Meyer
Dodgers 8, Braves 7
Toss this one in the pile of "games that got away". Cy Young Award winner Warren Spahn was staked to a 5-2 lead, but Brooklyn's all righty lineup wreaks havoc even on future HOF'ers. Spahnie did go the distance, but on the way to the parade he gave up 8 runs on 14 hits in 8 innings as the relentless Dodger lineup ran through him like a buzz saw. With Brooklyn's bats being so hot no one is focusing on the inconsistent pitching. Monk Meyer gave up 6 in 5 innings and was gifted a win. Milliken was solid in relief (3IP/1ER). Labine closed it out with a perfect 9th to record his first save of the campaign. Hitting star has to be Skoonj (4-5, 3RBI).
