Game 1 Mets 8 D-Backs 5 at Shea Stadium
Mets take 4-0 lead early as Benny Agbayani hits a 3 run HR (1) in the first. Junior Spivey cuts the lead in half with a 2 run HR in the 4th. After Todd Zeile hit a solo HR (1) to make it 5-2, Matt Williams blasted a 2 run HR (3) to make it 5-4. The DBacks tied it in the 7th when a run scored on an error by Turk Wendell who had just come in to the game in relief. But the Mets bounced right back in the bottom of the 7th as Wendell helped his own cause with an RBI single scoring Jay Payton with what proved to be the winning run. A pinch hit single later in the inning by Lenny Harris made it 7-5 before the Mets added an insurance run in the 8th.
Wendell was the winner in relief. Bobby Witt took the loss in relief
Game 2 Mets 6 D Backs 1 at Shea Stadium
Bobby Jones pitched shutout ball over 7 innings, allowing only 6 hits as the Mets won for the second straight day. Todd Zeile hit his second HR of the series, Mike Piazza drove in two runs and Edgardo Alfonzo and Jay Payton each had 3 hits as the Mets won easily. Mike Morgan was the starter and loser for Arizona
Game 3 D Backs 7 Mets 4 at Bank One Ballpark
103 degrees in Arizona and its Curt Schilling against Mike Hampton in a battle of aces. But is not Hampton's day as the Diamondbacks score 7 runs off him in just 5 2/3 as the lefty allowed 13 hits. Trailing 7-2 in the 7th, the Mets rally and score 2 with Schilling out of the game but they fall short as Byung-Hyun Kim picks up his 4th save of the year.
Steve Finley was 2-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Craig Counsell was 3-5 with 2 RBIs
Arizona is now 9-5 as they battle with the 38 Cubs for first place in the NL West. The Mets are now 5-9 as they fight to get out of the cellar in the NL East. Next: The Mets play the 1962 Giants while the Diamondbacks play the 28 Cardinals
