The Red Sox continue their early season struggles dropping the first 2 to the White Sox to push their losing streak to 10. Boston takes the finale to finally get in to the win column on the season.
Great pitchers duel between Mark Portugal and Gary Peters. Both starters left after allowing 1 run. Rich Garces gets in to trouble in the bottom of the 9th and gives up the game winning double to Don Buford scoring Ron Hansen.
Pedro Martinez is dominant for the Red Sox racking up 14 K's through 7 shut out innings. Martinez and the Sox had a 3-0 lead heading to the 8th with the righty ace still looking strong. However, he seemingly ran out of gas as a lead of bunt single and a single sandwiched around his 14th K spelled the end of his outing. Rheal Cormier gave up a hit to the only batter he faced which cut the lead to 3-1. Closer Derek Lowe was brought in but did nothing but makes things worse, facing 6 batters without retiring any. By the end of the 8th, the White Sox had put a 9 spot up on the board and the game was over with Boston dropping to 0-10.
After dropping the first 2 in Chicago, Boston was happy to be heading back to Fenway for the finale. The Boston fans were not looking all that confident with Brian Rose on the mound opposite Juan Pizarro. However, Rose was up to the task with 7 strong innings and the Boston bats used 2 big innings to put 9 runs on the board. Nomar Garciaparra had 4 hits, scored 2 runs and drove in 2 to pace the Red Sox attack.
