Willis vs Roe

Brooklyn opened up its homestand with their bats remaining hot.  Starter Preacher Roe gave up 4 runs in 6 2/3 and was never in jeopardy of losing.  The offense was balanced with Campy being the only starter not to grab a knock, but who can complain when your starting catcher is hitting .338.

Beckett vs Erskine

A matchup of defacto aces saw Anderson Indiana's own Carl Erskine continue his hot ways by holding the Fish bats at bay for 8 innings and allowing just one earned run.  His road roommate, one Edwin "Duke" Snider flashed the leather and lumber (3 for 3) as the Boys of Summer were just too much for young Josh to handle.

GAME 3 (DH/GM1)

Meyer vs Pavano

The series headed to South Beach, and the arms took control over the bats.  Unfortunately for the fish the Dodger arms were a tad stronger.  The results were no fault of either starter.  Monk Meyer (8.1 IP / 1 ER) had his best outing of the season and "lowered" his ERA to 4.11.  Florida's Carl Pavano showed the hefty Dodger bats "Who's the Boss" by matching Meyer pitch for pitch.  The results of this game fell squarely on the shoulders of each pen as the game wandered into extra innings.  In the top of the 10^th Jackie Robinson led off with a dribbler in front of the dish that future HOF'er Pudge Rodriguez manhandled and turned into an E-2.  Jack wasted no time swiping 2^nd and then moved to 3^rd on a WP.  No one in baseball teases opposing pitchers more than Mr. Robinson, who kept faking a steal of home, which ultimately distracted lefty reliever Alvarez who threw a fat one right down the middle to "the Duke of Flatbush", who hit one so far it might have landed on Bedford Avenue or at least A1A.  Bob Millken, who's been fine in relief all year was tasked with closing out the Fish in the bottom of the 10^th.  After getting PH'er Jeff Conine to pop out to 3^rd he walked the speedy Juan Pierre, who shockingly stole 2^nd with ease.  After Pee Wee mangled a Luis Castillo slow roller and followed it up with an errant throw Pierre flew home to make it a one run game.  With all the pressure on Milliken, the Dodger right hander fanned Mike Lowell and got Derek Lee to line out to Pee Wee to end it.

GAME 4 (DH/GM2)

Loes vs Phelps

In the night cap of this rare Sunday double header the Brooks came looking for not only a sweep of the DH, but a sweep of the series.  On the bump was cartoon cutup Billy "Don't win 20 or they'll expect it from you every year" Loes.  The embattled righty came into the game with an even 2-2 record, but an ERA that was about as high as the Williamsburg Savings Bank tower.  In the top of the 4^th Junior Gilliam doubled home  Skoonj to break the ice.  In a rare start in left field, pinch hitter extraordinaire Dick Williams (2-3 w/a walk) singled home Gilliam to make it 2-0.  With Loes (CG/SO/6 hits) cruising those 2 runs seemed like 20.  The Brooks added 2 more for insurance purposes in the 8^th on a 2 run single by the Duke as Billy Loes made it all the way to the finish line in an impressive complete game shutout performance.

'03 Bombers and '28 Mackmen Split 4 game set

The '28 A's and the '03 Yankees split the four games series.  Oh what the A's wouldn't do to come up with a closer. Mariano picked up a win and a save for the "evil empire" and Lefty Grove picked up his 6^th win of the season.

Detroit & Cleveland split

Cleveland and Detroit split four games, with each team winning at home. Cleveland gets to Detroit's beleagured bullpen in the late innings of the first two games but the Tigers pitching holds up after that.

'28 Cards Take 2 of 3 From '01 Diamondbacks

The suddenly hot 1928 Cardinals continued to play well in taking 2 of 3 from the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks.

 

D-Backs starter Curt Schilling was injured after only two batters in the series finale, but Miguel Bautista came in and threw 7.2 innings of 3 hit ball, with Byung Hyun Kim getting the final two outs for the save in salvaging a 2-0 victory.
