Dodgers take 2 of 3 from Mets

Game 1 at Shea Stadium

Mike Piazza hit his second solo HR of the game in the bottom of the 10th to give the Mets a come from behind walk off win. The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead into the 8th when Piazza homered to make it 2-1. In the bottom of the 9th, Lenny Harris pinch hit a single to tie the game, setting the stage for Piazza's extra inning dramatics.

 

Dusty Baker went 2-4 with a HR for LA.  Eric Cammack, in his first appearance of the season, got the win in relief. Charlie Hough took the loss

 

Game 2 at Shea Stadium

The Dodgers take an early 4-1 lead and hold on for the win. Tommy John (3-1) goes 7 2/3 scattering 12 hits to pick up the win, as Elias Sosa got his 7th save. Rick Reed struggled early but then settled down, in a losing effort.

 

Reggie Smith had the big blow – a 3 run HR (7) in the first. Trailing 4-1 in the 4th, the Mets plated two on a single by Jay Payton and a sac fly by Derek Bell. But John, Mike Garman and Sosa shut out the Mets the rest of the way.

 

Smith was 3-4 as was Bill Russell, who also made 2 great plays in the field. For the Mets Mike Bordick and Robin Ventura each went 3-4

 

Game 3 at Dodger Stadium

 

LA 11 NYM 3


 

After two close games at Shea, the Mets did not take well to the sunny skies of Los Angeles, as the Dodgers win in a rout. The Dodgers had 16 hits as they pounded Mets starter and loser Bobby Jones (2-3) and four relievers.Reggie Smith homered for the second straight day as he went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Dusty Baker hit TWO HRs and drove in 3 with 3 runs scored. Steve Yeager had 3 hits and Steve Garvey 2 with 2 RBIs. Don Sutton pitched 8 solid innings to get the win.

 

The Mets trailed 11-1 going to the 9th when they scored two meaningless runs, one of them on a solo shot by Jay Payton.

 

Dodgers are now 15-12 and are very much in contention in the NL West. The Mets drop to 13-14 and will have to start playing more consistently in order to have a shot at the playoffs. Next up: The Mets play the 39 Reds while the Dodgers play the 28 Cardinals

Cubbies take 2 of 3 from Dem Bums

Podres vs Page
Cubs 7, Dodgers 4



The young brash rookie lefty from upstate NY fanned 10, but in the process got shellacked by the Cubbies.  Podres allowed 7 runs in 7 innings.  Gabby Hartnett's 2 run blast in the 6th gave the Cubs a 3 run lead that they would never relinquish.

Dem Bums staked ace Oisk to a 3 run lead in the first as the curveball specialist from Anderson Indiana never wavered.  Oisk went 8 and gave up a run enroute to going 6-0 and lowering his ERA to 1.89.  Another Indianan, the Quiet Man, Gil Hodges went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.  Brooklyn's well balanced attack was too much for Cub starter Bill Lee.

Cubs 5, Dodgers 4



Ole' Preach was victimized for 4 runs in the top of the first as the Cubbies battered around and served notice.  Leadoff man Stan Hack (3-5) was the catalyst all day.  C.Bryant went the distance giving up just 1 run in a 138 pitch complete game performance.

58 Braves take 2 of 3 from 2000 Mets

Game 1 at County Stadium

Lenny Harris pinch hit a 2 run HR in the top of the 9th to give the Mets a come from behind win. The Braves led 1-0 going to the 9th on the strength of a Hank Aaron HR. Humberto Robinson relieved Joey Jay with one out and one on in the 9th and gave up the game winning blast. Bobby Jones (2-2) won it for the Mets as Armando Benitez got his 4th save


Game 2 at County Stadium

 

MIL 5  NYM  4


 

This time it is the Braves turn to win it in the 9th as Red Schoendienst doubled in pinch runner Casey Wise to break a t-t tie and give the Braves the win. Milwaukee trailed 4-1 going to the 7th but tied it against Mike Hampton as Mel Roach singled in a run and Eddie Matthews doubled in two to tie it. Robin Ventura had given the Mets a 4 -1 lead in the 6th with a 3 run HR. Turk Wendell took the loss in the 9th, coming in and failing to retire a batter. Don McMahon pitched 2 hitless innings in relief to get the victory.


Game 3 at Shea Stadium

 

MIL 7  NYM  2


 

Al Leiter did not have it today as the Mets ace was banged around by the Braves, who scored 2 in the 1st 2 in the 2d and 2 more in the 4th, all off Leiter. Frank Torre doubled in the first two runs, Schoendienst doubled in the third. A sac fly by Mel Roach made it 4-0. The Mets cut the lead in half on a 2 run HR by Edgardo Alfonzo in the 3rd off Braves starter and winner Bob Buhl (2-2). But Milwaukee stormed right back plating 2 in the 4th on RBI singles by Hank Aaron and Joe Adcock. Aaron later doubled in another run.

 

Milwaukee is now 14-10. The Mets drop to 12-12.  Next up: Milwaukee plays 28 St Louis while the Mets play the 77 Dodgers
