77-LA Nationals take 2 of 3 from 53-Brooks

Ebbets Field
GAME 1
Sutton vs Loes
LAD 4, BRO 3

All of the scoring occurred in the first 3 stanzas.  The rest of the concert the symphony was quiet.  That symphony would be the Dodger Symphony who showed up in full force to raz the team the refuse to call Dodgers and whom they refer to as "the LA Nationals".  The aforementioned migrants to the left coast relied on a 3 run blast by "the Penguin", Ron Cey and the right arm of Don Sutton (8IP/3ER).  While on most nights Sutton's line would be just average, it was not on this night when he was facing the league's most potent offense.  Bill Loes, who gave up 4 in 7IP took the loss.

GAME 2
Rhoden vs Roe
BRO 14, LAD 8

The "LA Nationals" knocked ole' Preach out of the box after 2 dreadful innings and 7 earned runs.  Most teams would be dead and buried, but not the Boys of Summer, who can explode offensively on any day that ends in "Y".  Bob Milliken was summoned from the pen to hold down the fort, which he did like a champ for 5+ innings until he handed the ball off to Clem Labine to close it.  Three Brooks had 3 hits (Jackie, Campy and Gil).  The team scored 14 on 16 hits and seems capable of outhitting their average pitching.

Dodger Std
GAME 3
Erskine vs Hooton
LAD 6, BRO 5

The series went 3,000 miles west to play the rubber match in O'Malley's Cathedral in Chavez Ravine.  The Brooks got bad news right off the bat when Oisk's chronic right home came up lame after 8 pitches.  The combo of Joe Black and wonder kid Johnny Podres were able to stave off the LA bats until the 7th when Ben Wade gave up a solo shot to Mr. Forearms, Steve Garvey.  That tied the game up a 4 all.  In the top of the 9th the Little Colonel doubled home Billy Cox to put Brooklyn up 5-4, but alas that was not going to last as Labine went right from the pen straight to Dressen's dog house.  Dusty Baker singled home Bill Russell and then scored the winning run as Reggie Smith singled him home.  Broadcaster Vin Scully couldn't wait for the series to end, because he wanted both groups to win.
