Todd Zeile hit a solo HR in the 7th to tie it and then won it in the 9th with an RBI double. Turk Wendell won it in relief as Armando Benitez picked up his 5th save of the year. Hank Johnson took the loss in relief
Game 2 at Crosley Field
Mets 7 Reds 2 10 innings
Reds tie it in the 9th before the Mets score FIVE in the 10th to win it. Darryl Hamilton got the game winning single to put the Mets up 3-2. Later in the frame, Edgardo Alfonzo put things out of reach with a GRAND SLAM HR!. Hamilton, making a rare start, was 3-5 with 2 RBIs. Benitez won it in relief. Junior Thompson took the loss, allowing the 5 runs in the 10th.
Game 3 at Shea Stadium
Reds 12 Mets 9
Reds score SEVEN runs in the first inning off Mets starter and loser Glendon Rusch, who allowed 9 runs in three innings but only four of them earned. Mets battled back, after trailing 11-0 and scored 4 in the 9th and were threatening against Johnny Van der Meer when the lefty finally ended the inning.
Bucky Walters went 8 1/3 to get the win for Cincy and helped his own cause as he was 5-5 with 2 doubles, a triple and 2 RBIs! 1B Frank McCormick was 3-6 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. SS Billy Myers was 4-5 with a double, triple, and 3 RBIs. For the Mets SS Melvin Mora was 3-3 with a double and 2 RBIs, after entering the game in the 6th inning. In the bottom 9th, the Mets sent 7 men to the plate, scored 4 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks and were threatening when the game ended.
Mets finally get to .500 (15-15) trying to get into the race in the NL East. The Reds drop to 13-17 in the NL West.
