The 1938 Cubs were 9-2, facing the medicore (4-7) Cardinals from a decade earlier. But the Cardinals seemed to play their best three games of the year against the rival North Siders, and won them all.
Bill Sherdel pitching an amazing economical game in the finale, throwing only 72 pitches in shutting out the Cubs on two hits. If I have time I will put a more extensive write up on the blog.
