2000 Mets take 2 of 3 from '62 Giants

Game 1 at Candlestick Park

Mets 5 Giants 3  11 innings

Todd Zeile hit a three run HR in the top of the 11th to win it for the Mets. The HR came off reliever Don Larsen. Mets took 2-0 lead only to see the Jints tie it in the 6th on a 2 RBI triple by Jim Davenport. The Giants took the lead in the 7th on a Jose Pagan single. In the 9th, the Mets tied it when Darryl Hamilton pinch hit a triple with 2 outs to score Jay Payton with the tying run.

John Franco won it in relief. Armando Benitez pitched a 1-2-3 11th for his second save

Game 2 at Shea Stadium

Mets 7 Giants 4 10 innings

The Mets win in extra innings as Todd Zeile does it again! This time, the Mets first sacker hits a 3 run walk off HR in the bottom of the 10th – winning the game with an extra inning HR for the second day in a row. Once again Don Larsen, doing his best Byung-jun Kim imitation, was victimized and took the loss.

Giants took a 1-0 lead on a second inning HR by Felipe Alou. The Mets tied it in the third on an RBI double by Derek Bill and took the lead on a 2 run HR by Melvin Mora. The Giants came right back to tie it, in the 5th, on back to back HRs by Davenport and Tom Haller. In the 9th, Davenport hit his second HR of the game to put SF ahead 4-3 but the resilient Mets tied it once again, in the bottom of the 9th, as pinch hitter Timo Perez comes through with a 2 out single to drive in Lenny Harris and tie the score. That set the stage for Zeile's 10th inning heroics.

Rick White was the winner in relief.

Game 3

Giants 6 Mets 3  at Shea Stadium

The Giants salvage the final game of the series, beating up on Mets starter Bobby Jones for 5 runs in 6 innings. Trailing 2-1 in the 5th, the Giants took the lead for good on a 2 run HR by Willie Mays, his 5th of the year. SF extended the lead in the 6th on an RBI double by Harvey Kuenn and added another run in the 7th on a solo blast by Felipe Alou (5). Mike Piazza hit a solo HR in the 9th but it was too little too late for the Mets

Kuenn was 3-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Piazza was 4-5 with a HR and 3 RBIs. Billy O' Dell started and got the win. Stu Miller pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings in relief to pick up his first save of the season

The Mets are now 7-10 as they try to get out of the NL East cellar. The Giants are 5-12, also fighting to get out of the cellar in the NL West.

Next up: the 2000 Mets play the 2009 Phillies in a four game set, while the 62 Giants take on the 1939 Reds in a four game series of their own
