KOD30 - NLDS - 'Dem Bums outlast Dbacks to win in 5

Ebbets Field

GAME 1

Schilling vs Erskine

Dodgers 6, Dbacks 5 (14 inn)

The opening game of this LDS had everything a baseball fan's imagination could contrive rolled up into one game.  For the first 8 innings you had a scoreless pitcher's duel featuring  two of the most clutch performers on the hill.  Brooklyn's "Oisk" and Arizona's "Schill" both threw up goose eggs for 8 innings then faltered in the 9th.  Arizona struck first taking advantage of some untimely walks, and error and a sac fly by Reggie Sanders.  That succeeded in quieting the most noisy fan base on the planet.  That was until Campy blasted a 2 run shot with nobody out in the home half of the 9th, which sent the game into extra innings.  When Matt Williams scored on a Clem Labine wild pitch with 2 outs in the top of the 10th the sound of gloom once again hovered over Bedford Avenue.  Junior Gilliam led off the bottom of the 10th with a hot smash to second that was booted by Counsell and thrown away.  That should have given the Brooks their leadoff man on, but Gilliam tried to stretch his gain into scoring position, but was thrown out at 2nd for the 1st out of the frame.  When reliever Prinz fanned Pee Wee for the second out Ebbets was as quiet as Empire Blvd at 3am.  Up stepped the Duke of Flatbush, who slammed a homer far into Crown Heights to tie the game at 3.  Neither team scored in the 11th.  The top of the 12th saw the Dbacks break the game open with a two out two run single off the bat of Mark Grace.  At least that's what everyone in the Borough of Churches believed.  Wayne Belardi, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the 9th, slammed a HR to bring the game to within 1.  Junior followed with a triple off the chain link fence in right, then scored on Pee Wee's liner  up the middle to tie the game for the 4th time.  Unable to score Reese, dem Bums picked up their gloves and headed to the field for an uneventful 13th inning.  Reliever Jim Hughes, who replaced Labine, pitched a perfect 14th and was gifted the win when Belardi, for the 2nd time today, led off the inning with a blast into Bedford Avenue for what modern day pundits call a "walk off" home run.  The Dodgers take the opening game of the series in a 14 inning affair that was amazingly played in less than 3 hours.

Boxscore is posted here.

Dodgers lead series 1-0

GAME 2

R.Johnson vs Meyer

Dbacks 8, Dodgers 4

For 8 innings the "Big Unit", Randy Johnson was on cruise control fanning 8 and setting one Dodger down after another.  Up 8-0 manager Corey extended the courtesy to Johnson by allowing him the chance to grab the complete game shutout and finish out the 9th.  With 2 outs and one on, Johnson lost his control and walked Hodges and Furillo.  Campy stepped up and blasted a grand slam to make the final score look somewhat respectable as the Dbacks doubled up dem Bums to tie the series up at one game apiece.  Mark Grace paced the Dbacks 12 hit attack with 3 safeties.  Luis Gonzalez went yard twice.  Grace and Finley each hit homers as well.

Series tied 1-1

The BOB

GAME 3

Loes vs Batista

Dodgers 16, Dbacks 2

The Dodgers served notice to all today letting us know just why they were the best hitting team in the NL.  16 runs on 20 hits, 7 of those runs off of Miguel Batista who was pretty much un-hittable all year.  Those 7 runs all came in the top of the 4th.  Billy Loes gave up just 2 runs over 7 2/3 to grab the win.  Joe Black tidied things up getting the final 4 outs without a blemish.  Arizona ran out of relievers and threw Steve Finley out there for an inning to mop things up.  Brooklyn's 16 run barrage curiously was aided by just one home run from Duke Snider's bat.  The Duke (3-6) knocked in 4.  Jackie and Pee Wee both knocked in 3.  Every Dodger starter, including Loes (who doubled) had a hit.

Dodgers lead series 2-1

GAME 4

Roe vs Schilling

Dbacks 5, Dodgers 3

With their backs up against the wall the Dbacks went back to Curt Schilling on short rest.  Brooklyn went with Preacher Roe, who typically gives up some runs, but gets a load of run support.  Duke Snider's 2 out blast in the first staked the Brooks to a 1-0 lead that would last about an inning until Preach got into deep doo-doo in the bottom the 2nd and was lucky to escape with just 2 runs allowed.  Ole' Preach was about to pitch a fit when with 2 outs his opposing number (Schilling) rolled a seeing eye single just out of the outstretched arms of both Gilliam and Gil.  A Reggie Sanders HR in the bottom of the 3rd made it 3-1 for Schill, who was walking the tightrope and pitching on adrenaline.  A sac fly by Skooonj and a single by Bobby Cox tied the game and chased the right winger from the desert.  With the game tied and the season on the line the Dbacks were not about to fold up the tent.  Gonzo and Grace hit solo shots off of previously undefeated Bob Milliken to give the Snakes the lead .  Kim pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the save and send the series to a decisive game 5.

Series tied 2-2

Ebbets Field

GAME 5

R.Johnson vs Erskine

Dodgers 10, Dbacks 1

A well rested Oisk (Carl Erskine) was tapped to face the Big Unit, who was on short rest, for the decisive game 5.  Both men were on their games early as the contest was scoreless after 4 ½ innings.  Then in the bottom of the 5th the floodgates opened as Johnson hit the showers and Arizona's chances of victory evaporated.  Pee Wee led off the inning sending Finley to the warning track on a long fly ball that looked like it had a chance to get out.  Duke singled and Gil Hodges blasted one deep into the night to make it 2-0.  Campy walked and Skooonj singled.  When Johnson got Cox to line out to second it looked like he was going to escape further damage.  Unfortunately for him he was running on fumes thanks to only 3 days rest and the Dodger batters drank their Oveltine this morning.  Junior doubled home Campy and Oisk singled home Skooonj and Junior to bust the game open and chase Johnson from the bump.  After Arizona got on the board with a solo run in the 7th The Boys of Summer added 3 more in the bottom of the inning and 2 more in the 8th to stake Oisk with an insurmountable lead.  Ben Wad finished off the 9th in an non-save situation as the Dbacks took the Dodgers to the brink, but the #1 ranked team in the NL survived to move on to the NLCS.

Dodges Win Series 3-2

KOD30 - ALDS - Damn Yankees Drop LDS To '28 A's

The home field advantage was turned on its head as the A's won all three games on the road and dropped both games at home in route to a 3 games to 2 series win.

Game 1: '28 A's 7, '03 Yankees 4; WP Grove (9 – 1); LP Wells (2 – 3); HRs Soriano (8), Foxx (8)

Jimmie Foxx drove in three runs with a single and 2-run homer (8) to lead the A's offense in a 7 – 4 win to open the series at Yankee Stadium.

The A's scored three in the top of the first on a double by Bing Miller and run scoring singles off the bats of Jimmie Foxx and Jimmie Dykes, but the Yanks came back in the bottom of the frame on an Alfonso Soriano two run shot, his eighth, to come within a run, 3 – 2. The A's hit the Yanks with another three run inning in the third on a single by Al Simmons driving in Bing Miller and Jimmie Foxx followed with a homer to extend the lead to 6 – 2.

The Yankees scored single runs in the bottom of the third and sixth innings to come within two runs of the A's, but a Ty Cobb single extended the lead to 7 – 4 and Lefty Grove held the Yankees scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Game 2: '28 A's 6, '03 Yankees 3; WP: Walberg (4-3); LP: Wells (2_4) HRs: Posada (3)

The Yankees jumped out to a 1 - 0 lead in the third with Derek Jeter singling  home Mondesi.  The A's tied the game at one all in the 4th on a Jimmie Foxx single; then struck for two runs in the sixth and the seventh for a 5 – 1 lead with Mickey Cochrane singling in two in the sixth and walking in another in the seventh.  The Yankees on a solo shot by Posada and a run-scoring single by Hideo Matsui tightened the score to 5 – 3, but the A's scored a run in the eighth on a wild pitch and Eddie Rommel held the Yankees scoreless in the eighth and ninth for the A's victory and a two to nothing lead in the series.

Game 3: '03 New York 5, '28 A's 4; WP Rivera, (2 – 1): LP, Rommel (1 – 6); HRs Giambi (11), Simmons (6)

Philadelphia fans were jubilant as their A's returned home needing just one win to take the series, but left disappointed as Jason Giambi hit an 11th inning two run homer off Eddie Rommel to capture a 5 – 4 win and avoid elimination.

The A's out hit the Yankees 14 to 9, but could not get the big hit as they left the bases loaded in the third and fourth inning, failing to score a single run in either frame.

Alfonso Soriano broke a one run tie with a two run single in the 6th and the Yankees jumped out to a 3 – 1 lead, but the A's came back and tied the game in the bottom of the 7th on a single by Bing Miller and a pinch hit double by aging Eddie Collins.

Jason Giambi hit the game-winning  two run homer in the 11th, but the A's made matters interesting  with an Al Simmons home run to lead off the bottom of the 11th,  but Jose Contreras got the next three batter for his first save of the season and a 5 – 4 Yankee win.

Game 4: '03  Yankees 4, '28 A's 1; WP: Mussina, (5- 3); LP Grove, (9 – 2)  HRs: Giambi (12), Williams (3), Soriano (9)

Facing elimination again and facing the A's ace Lefty Grove things looked bleak for the Yankees, but homers from Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams staked the Yankees to a 3 – 0 lead.  The A's threatened in the 4th with three hits and two walks, but could score only one run.  Alfonso Soriano homered in the 9th to extend the lead to 4 – 1.   Mariano Rivers pitched a scoreless 9th for his ninth save of the season and the Yankees had tied the series and were heading back home.

Game 5: '28 A's 4, '03 Yankees 2;  WP: Jack Quinn (7 – 0) LP: Roger Clemens,  (2 – 5) HRs Al Simmons (6)

Back to Yankee Stadium with the series tied at two each and Yankee fans hoping for the Yankee magic that had led to 27 World Championships would reassert itself.

Neither team could score in the first two innings, but Mule Haas doubled home Max Bishop to give the A's a 1 – 0 lead in the third and Al Simmons followed with a long homer to extend the lead to 3 – 0.  In the bottom of the frame the Yankees got to Quinn with a walk and three hits but could score only one run on a Derek Jeter single.

In the sixth Sammy Hale singled home Mickey Cochrane to extend the lead to 4 – 1.

Quinn weakened in the bottom of the eighth yielding hits to Matsui and Johnson to lead off the inning. The A's brought in the second game starter Rube Walberg to face the left-hand hitting Jason Giambi who walked to load the bases with no one out.   Soriano grounded out to score one run, but Walberg struck out Mondesi and Ventura to prevent further damage.

In the ninth Williams singled with one out and the A's brought in Eddie Rommel who retired the next two batters to give the A's a hard fought divisional championship.

ALWC - 78-KCR 1, 17-CLE 0

ALWC
Royals Stadium
Tomlin vs Gale
KCR 1, CLE 0

A nail biting pitcher's duel between 5th starters Josh Tomlin and Rich Gale.  The game was a zero/zero dealock until Amos Otis led off the bottom of the 7th with a home run.  Marty Pattin would get the final 8 outs for the save as Gale, 5-0, got the win.  KC moves on to the LDS to face the mighty Seattle M's.

KOD30 - Playoffs - NLWC - D-Backs Beat Cards 7-4 to Advance

Congratulations to Isaac Corey, whose 2001 Arizona DiamondBacks advanced to in the post season with a 7-4 thumping of the 1928 St. Louis Cardinals.

The game started ominously for St. Louis as Craig Counsell drove a triple into the right field corner, and later scored. The DBacks followed with two solo home runs later in the contest, before the Cardinals closed the gap to 3-2 after 6 innings.

But the DiamondBacks put it away with a 4-run seventh, three scoring on a pinch-hit home run by Jay Bell. Cards manager Bike Mike had walked Matt Williams with a runner on second and two-out, to get the DiamondBacks to either remove pitcher Miguel Bautista for a pinch hitter, or let the righty bat. Isaac pulled the right strings by sending up Bell, who essentially took the drama out of a possible close finish with the 3-run bomb.

Bike Mike

PS-On a personal note, this has been a fun KOD with a unique theme. My '28 Cardinals performed a little better than I expected, finishing only a couple games behind the powerful 1953 Dodgers. Thanks Marc!

Yanks over Tigers 3-1, score tie for AL East

The Yankees forge into a tie for the division with a three games to one series win over the Tigers. But the Tigers deny them the outright division crown in the final game. Pat Mullin's two-run shot in the eighth off reliever Jeff nelson sealed the spoiler win for Detroit.

Fwd: KOD30 - Week 11 - Philly Takes 3 of 4 From the Lowly Birds

For two teams going in completely opposite directions this series was pleasantly competitive.  In game 1 te Birds pulled out a 3-2 victory over the A's.  Second game was all Philly, but the third game in Philly was a 10 inning nail-biter Philly won 5-4.  In the finale George Earnshaw for the A's totally dominated for 8 innings before tiring and the O's fell short in their comeback bid scoring 2 in the top of the ninth which was 2 less than needed to extend their season.

Great year by Philly, looking forward to seeing how the playoffs run!

KOD: Kluber No-Hits Yanks but New Yorkers Win the Series

In a showdown between two teams tied with the A's for first place in the NL East, the Yankees come up big to take the series 3-1. Tied at a game apiece, the Yankees won the last two at home, the finale on a two-homer day from Jason Giambi.

But at Progressive Field, the Tribe's Corey Kluber pitches a no-hitter, only allowing an error on a catcher's interference call.  That error represented the Yankees' only baserunner, as Kluber also gave up no walks on eight strikeouts.

The Yankees win in the series vaults them over the Tribe, which hopes to stay in the playoff running in the final series of the year.

38 CHN vs 58 MIL - NO-HITTER ALERT - Larry French 1938 Cubs

Cubs and Braves split but the highlight of the series was a No-No by Chicago's lefty Larry French in game 3,  The Braves saw a lot of pitches (130) from French who walked 5 but just could not get a hit.  This No-No was thrown against a lineup with 3 HOF'ers in it (Aaron, Mathews and Schoendienst).

Brooklyn takes 2 of 3 from San Fran

Candlestick Park

GAME 1

Erskine vs Marichal

SFG 3, BRO 0

In a match-up of respective aces, the Dominican Dandy (Juan Marichal) held the high card.  Brooklyn's Oisk came into the game with a perfect 6-0 record and a sub 2 ERA.  He didn't have his best stuff, but he battled hard and allowed San Fran to scratch out 3 picket fences, but the real story was how Marichal held the league's most potent offense to just 7 hits and zero runs.  Offensively Davenport, Kuenn and Pagan knocked in all 3 runs for the Giants in a game that took less than 2 hours to play.

GAME 2

Meyer vs Sanford

BRO 6, SFG 4

Meyer and Sanford both came out dealing. The game was tied at 1 all until the bottom of the 7th when the Jints plated 2 on a Stretch McCovey PH HR and chased Meyer from the bump.  Campy's lead off HR in the top of the 8th put Brooklyn within one and back to back doubles by Gil and Skooonj tied the game up at 3.  When Skooonj scored on a weak grounder by Pee Wee the Dodgers grabbed themselves a 1 run lead, which lasted just 2 batter into the home half of the 8th when Felipe Alou took reliever Jim Hughes deep to RF to tie it.  The top of the 9th saw Brooklyn play a little small ball to the tune of 2 runs.  Clem Labine came on board to close it out in the 9th for his 6th save of the campaign

Ebbets Field

GAME 3

O'Dell vs Loes

BRO 8, SFG 7

The series shifted to the tiny ballpark on Bedford and McKeever and with that came the anticipation of some offensive fireworks.  The Billy's (O'Dell and Loes) both were vying for the title of goat as neither had the recipe for recording outs.  O'Dell (4IP / 2ER) was done after 4 and Loes (6IP / 4ER) was lucky to get in 6.  That put the ball in the hands of each team's respective pens.  The Jints trotted out 3 guys who couldn't put up a bagel.  Brooklyn had Bob Milliken (5-0, 2.70), who gave up just 1 run in 3 innings or work.  With that said, Milliken was poised to grab a no-decision until with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th Duke Snider blasted a walkoff shot over the chain link fence and into Bedford Ave to send the Brooklyn faithful home happy.

What a great series.  San Fran could have easily taken 2 of 3.  Ending a series on a walk-off HR adds to the drama.  Seeing Harvey Kuenn's name evoked memories of Vin Scully's commentary for the final out of Koufax's perfect game 54 years ago.
