1953 Boys of Summer Sweep 1958 Milwaukee Braves to take KOD30 NL Pennant

Ebbets Field

GAME 1

Willey vs Meyer

Dodgers 11, Braves 6

Milwaukee jumped out to a 5-0 lead by battering Monk Meyer from pillar to post in the first and third innings.  Then a bolt of lightning struck in the bottom of the 4th as Brooklyn sent 13 batters to the plate netting 8 runs.  Meyer was not given an opportunity to continue as he was replaced by the brash 21 year old lefty Johnny Podres, who tossed 4 shutout innings in relief to get the win.  Roy Campanella was the batting star (4-5, 3 RBI).  Campy started the 8 run 4th with a double and hit a homer in his 2nd AB of the inning.  Billy Cox (3-4) also went deep along with his normally sure handed play at the hot corner.

Dodgers lead series 1-0

GAME 2

Loes vs Spahn

Dodgers 9, Braves 3

For the second game in a row the Braves jumped out to a quick lead only to see the Dodgers exercise their lumber.  On paper one would have given a huge edge to the ageless Warren Spahn, but for some reason unbeknownst to most who follow Dem Bums, this Billy Loes character seems to rise to the occasion and pitch his arse off vs the better teams.  Spahn left the game in the 8th having given up 6 runs (5 earned).  Loes gave up 3 (2 earned) over 7 and pretty much cruised to victory.  Clem Labine (7th save) finished off the final 2 allowing just 2 hits and no runs.  Campy shined again both at the plate and behind the plate.  The Dodger MVP was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI's thanks to two homers.

Dodgers lead series 2-0

County Stadium

GAME 3

Erskine vs Burdette

Dodgers 6, Braves 5

The series shifted west to the home of the cheese heads, but the results were no different.  Brooklyn's bats were just too much for the Braves arms and Campy once again (3-5) went deep and knocked in 2 runs.  This was not the normal type of win for Oisk, (8-3, 2.52), who gave up 5 runs in  7 1/3 innings.  Throughout the season Oisk was much stinger, but it was time for his offense to carry him for once after he spotted the Braves 3 runs in the bottom of the first.  The Dodgers got those 3 back in the top of the 2nd.  The rest of the game was a see-saw battle.  Brave starter Lew Burdette rubbed up a blister in the 2nd and had to leave the game.  This stretched the already think Milwaukee pen to it's limits.  Juan Pizarro gave them 4 solid innings, but was victimized by a Del Crandall throwing error on a sac bunt attempt.  Joey Jay and Robinson both did their best to hold the Dodgers down.  Milwaukee had a great chance to tie the game up and possibly take the lead in the 8th.  PH Wes Covington led off with a double and moved to 3rd on Crandall's grounder to Hodges at 1st.  Johnny Logan singled him home then moved to third on Frank Torre's single.  Leadoff man Red Schoendienst hit a one hop bullet to Pee Wee at short who flipped to Gilliam to turn a text book 6-4-3 DP to snuff out the Braves rally.  Bob Milliken, in relief of Oisk got that grounder was able to get out of that jam and one he created in the 9th to grab the save and give the Brooks a commanding lead in the series.

Dodgers lead series 3-0

GAME 4

Roe vs Willey

Dodgers 8, Braves 5

Milwaukee, down three zip was forced to start Willey on short rest.  That did not bode well for the residents of County Stadium.  Willey mailed in a sub par performance (5 runs in 5 1/3 innings).  While Brooklyn started Preacher Roe wasn't a heck of a lot better (4 runs in 6 2/3), ole' Preach didn't have to be as his offensive support was relentless.  If Milwaukee's starter was sub par his relief was just as bad.  The Dodgers again got 2 innings of scoreless relief from Labine to hold off a late charge by the Braves, where they scored 3 runs in the 7th to narrow the Dodger lead to 6-5.  Then, on cue, the Brooks scored 2 in the 8th with back to back 2 out singles by Jackie Robinson and Duke Snider , which made Clem's life a bit easier.  Brooklyn sweeps its way to the pennant as the Boys of Summer proved to be just too much for the Bravos.

Dodgers win series 4-0.
